This is a tale of buyers remorse. What started as lighthearted purchase has quickly degraded into a horrible decision that I regret ever bit of. Reading through Oppo is like salt in the wound, constantly finding more and more things that are lacking in my stupid Corvette. I don't want to suffer alone here, so I thought I'd share the things the make me regret ever buying this stupid piece of shit.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
1. The Keys
I bought this car because I wanted to make a statement. I wanted everybody to know I have a Corvette and goddamnit, I'm doing pretty well in life. But no, GM once again just walked over to the god damn part bin and gave me another piece of plastic crap.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
2. Gas Mileage
There's only two types of fuel economy from this car: Horrible and Amazing.
If you want to drive enthusiastically or have any sort of fun in it, the mileage turns to shit (11-15 instant mpg) Thanks a lot V8 motor, some of us actually care about how we spend our dollars. I'd prefer not to give all of it to big oil corporations who will just tuck it away in the Cayman Islands for taxing.
And then, as some sort of backhanded apology, if you drive the car nicely or on highway journeys, it gets crazy mileage (32-35 highway MPG) The point of my sports car isn't to get better mileage than my Scion xB. If I wanted a more fuel efficient car, I would've bought a Chevy Volt, not a Corvette. Driving this car on the highway makes my xB purchase seem pointless. Thanks GM.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
3. Ungodly GM Quality
I bought this car coming from my incredible S2000 thinking, "The Corvette was a more expensive car in it's time. Surely everything is better." How unbelievably wrong could I be. Every single goddamn piece of this interior was lifted from some other piece-of-crap mid-sized family hauler.
That radio? Silverado Those climate controls? Tahoe The turn signal stalk? Saturn The On-Board Computer? Buick LeSabre. The shifter throw? Probably a 3500 Silverado. On a flagship performance car, you think they'd at least give some care about where you spend your time, but no. Nothing actually squeaks or rattles at all, it's very quiet, but just knowing that they skimped upsets me. It definitely doesn't feel like a car worth the four figures I paid for it.
Sure it's a sports car, performance blah blah, but it's not worth having to spend any more time in that horrible shitbox Fisher-Price interior.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
4. Turn Signal Stalks
I know this kind of relates to the previous point but here me out. I used to own a E46 BMW. That car had proper turgid German stalks. You could push those down and they made a proper 'tok' noise. You can pick up an E46 for roughly $4,000 now and was BMW's entry level car. The Corvette on the other hand, is supposed to be the prestigious high-performance car has the same interior components are as $1,500 Cavalier. You push the stalk down in this Corvette and it makes a 'whack' sound that could only be described as "fly swatter hitting a child's slide" It soul-crushing every time I use them.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
5. It's too reliable
As a car guy, you buy a car not just for transportation, but as for something to enjoy, through sickness and health. You buy a car as a companion to run with the good times and to nurse through the bad. Wrenching is the American gearhead's favorite past-time, and the Corvette has robbed me of that.
Since I have purchase the car, not one thing has broken: No blown out tires, no spun bearings, no blown turbos, not even a check engine light.
This may sound like the epitome of a first-world privileged-white-male problem, but it's not, trust me. You love a car not only for it's quality and materials, but for it's quirks and characteristics, and the Corvette has none. It's just a machine that works. Any time I drive it, it takes me wherever and back; There's no sense of adventure or excitement that break downs or possible failure give.
At least an old Audi makes you feel something.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
6. Plastic Body
Top Gear said it best, "This is the stuff newsreaders are made out of." It's fiberglass: Plastic and flimsy. The rear flexes if you push it and it'll crack if I'm in a crash. None of the rest of the car bows if I push it, but knowing the back does is enough for me to doubt my safety. After watching a crash video, I saw the car fared well, but I'm not totally convinced. I still think it's unsafe.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
7. Nobody Notices Me
The whole damn point of buying a flagship sports car is to be noticed. I bought this car thinking people will look at me and be amazed. Nope. Here in the midwest, there's apparently a Corvette on every block and, this is no joke, 18 Corvettes in the square mile I live in.
I show up to any car show and theres 25 more of them. I'm with a girl and she sees it, she doesn't car because her dad has one. Some people who see me in it ask if it's my dad's car. I might as well just buy a Lexus IS250 if I wanted to get zero attention. It's useless.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
8. Soft Touch Plastics
There are none. It's like they didn't care about the person in the drivers seat at all. A real driving enthusiasts actually cares about what his car's interior is made of. Did they not think I could tell?
It seriously spoils the whole driving experience knowings that isn't there.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
9. Cargo Space
This kind of ties back to my 'no faults' argument, but it's worth mentioning. GM etched out every bit of cargo space they could in this car, and it doesn't make any sense with the core of what a Corvette should be. This car is supposed to be about sporty performance, not practicality.
However, I went to grab groceries in it recently. I came out and put some of my bags in the two cubby holes pictured on the lower left and ride sides. Before realizing, all of my groceries fit in those two cubbies. Milk, bread, chicken, burgers, hot dogs, fruit, rice and chips. And there was still the entirety of the trunk worth of room left.
You buy a sports car because you want to make a bold statement that you care about performance over practicality and Chevy is so used to making crappy Tahoes and Malibus that it forgot the identity of what a Corvette is. I want to experience sports car problems, but the Corvette has none to offer.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Honestly, I don't know what to do with this car. I want something that has some flaw and class to it, and the Corvette has none of it to offer. It's fast, yes, but it's not worth having to deal with the terrible turn signal stalk and the Fisher-Price interior.
The Americans simply can't build a car as well as the Europeans it turns out. It drives great, but the little things ruin the car. I don't want to live with a car where they swap from the parts bin. Car & Driver can say what they want about it's amazing performance and handling, but the full driving experience includes soft-touch plastics, and the Corvette simply doesn't cut the mustard. I'm done with it.

I love Corvettes, but nearly all of these reasons would be why I would still consider buying one if I were to in fact come across the means to afford having one.
Now, we could contrast this with my flagship "sports" car (though I'll be honest, it's more of a GT style car), and say that owning something that does get attention, and does break, and does give me a thrill every time I take it out because something else might break, I would find a Corvette to be a wonderful refreshment.
My Magnum has it's power steering troubles, it also needs a laundry list of general maintenance parts as well. My SL600 Sport however, it's been pretty reliable. It had one "major" breakdown, which wasn't major, cost only $400 to fix at a shop, but I couldn't fix it on the side of the road. That's my differentiation between minor and major. Can I keep going? Minor. Should I call a tow? Probably major.
But all that said, if you were to pick a single thing off of that list and say if this were to be changed, it would change my mind about the Corvette, what would it be?
Personally, I have but one complaint, and it's simple. The plastic body. I could forgive everything about the Corvette if it didn't have a plastic body. I was looking at one at C&C just this past weekend, and the front bumper didn't even come close to lining up with the body line around the headlights. It was horribly off, and didn't look good at all. Now, my Magnum has a replacement (not OEM) front bumper, and a replacement OEM hood, neither of which fully line up with the car. I could forgive every other problem with the car if it could just line up and look amazing.
I walk away from my car, and I have never once failed to look back at it because it's what I wanted, I found it, and now it's mine all mine. I feel the same way about both of my cars, but as far as the Corvette goes, the C7 is on the right track, but I'm just on the fence about it. I do like it, I'm just not yet sold on it. I would absolutely take one, I fully respect how well they drive and how much better than previous generations they are, I love the new looks, I'm just not sure I would choose it over other cars in that price range.
That's what the Corvette lacks when I look at the C5. For that kind of money, there are other things I could buy that I would enjoy seeing and being seen in more.
You can always just get a louder exhaust. That worked for my friends getting attention in their Corvettes (I know several Corvette owners, and they're all obscenely loud).

I get being unhappy, but this article comes off as being angry about the relability, access to parts, 32mpg on highway and ability to actually put your things in it to go on a trip. Sell the car and buy something you like. Don't complain about gas mileage because any car faster than the Vette will be worse. My viper has a ton of parts bin parts it's awesome because it lowers ownership costs. If you want a car that doesn't share parts just wait till things break and how you wish you did. The most important lesson should be don't buy cars for attention from other people. Buy a car you love, not a car you think everyone else will or else you will be in the same boat.

My new truck also suffers from Shitty GM Key Syndrome. $40k+ for the damn thing and it still has the separate key and a FOB that looks like it was sourced from Harbor Freight.
Also, it's designed so that any time there is lateral movement, it swings and whacks against the steering column. It's super quiet otherwise. So when you're driving, all you hear is "whack....... whack..... whack.. whack... whackwhackwhack................. whack......"
It's dumb and everybody involved in bringing it to market should be canned and blacklisted so they never work in the industry again.

I can't tell if this is satire or not, but as a former C5 owner I can kind of see some of the thought process here.
I had the red version of this car; a 2000 FRC. I liked my 1995 C4 better . Both cars were red with black interior. You seem to have chromed Z06 wheels and not the brushed aluminum 5-spokes which I had. I also bought the car new. Your car is also missing the fog lamps. WTF? I assume you did the CAGS delete/disable. Does yours have the stiffer Z51 suspension?
The C5 was fast and fun but it was a little too "clean cut" if you will. It seemed to lack any kind of muscle car mystique. Tricking it out to make it look a little nicer wasn't hard. A chrome or polished aluminum shift knob fix the car right right up. Also look at a new radio.
90% of your problems will be fixed right away. If you want to go further, a small, tasteful rear spoiler and some exhaust tips (or Borla exhaust) would be the way to go.
If the interior plastic is too cheesy for you, get it replaced with carbon fiber. You can also replace the interior door handles with chrome/steel instead of plastic and the same with the lock levers.
If that doesn't do it for you, you can sell it with the slight mods you made and not be out a whole lot of cash.

Mustang and Camaro owners think they have more useable space than you
Scion and Prius drivers hate you
Escalade and Suburban drivers fear getting into an accident with you
V6 model sedan owners think they can keep up with you
Many 4-banger turbos CAN keep up with you with the right tune
And finally, you get a piece of open road and get demolished by a Porsche
You buy a car that YOU LIKE! Period! Is there a way that you can regain the joys of having your Corvette in your life??? Add an aftermarket exhaust and plant "student driver" stickers on the back of it? (Super Speeders reference is lame, but I enjoyed making said reference)... Maybe you need to go on a short to medium length road trip to really see if this car can be brought back into your mindset of likeable?
If all else fails, you should be able to get back most of what you paid for it. Go back to the drawing board and figure out a car, within your budget, that you feel you will actually enjoy. Make sure it is all about you though.
P.S. Don't buy a car thinking it will bring you more attention. Odds are, the only attention you'll get is the kind that you wish you would have rather avoided.

Either way, even if they are abnormal it has fuck all to do with what they are made of. If they were made out of titanium it wouldn't make a lick of difference as to how they fit together.

I'll give you $5,000.
I might be able to think of something to do with it.

Its so sad how cheep GM is with their key fobs. They have been using the same ones for at least 10 years.

Coming from an S2K this interior, and especially gearbox, must have been an especially soul robbing disappointment.

It took me a while to realize this was humor. The interior part could be 100% serious. I was getting mad.
Well done.

How did your S2000 compare? I'm pretty set on picking up an S as a fun driver's car and weekend warrior for at most 3 HPDE events. The C5 has crossed my mind many times though.

The Americans simply can't build a car as bad as the Europeans it turns out.
FTFY.
It's reliable, gets good gas mileage, while being fast. Your gripes are they key isn't fancy, and the interior sucks. Was this a surprise?

Man... you must REALLY hate your Corvette if you double posted this.
Listen... I'll do you a favour. You drive the Corvette to Toronto and I'll take the burden of owning this *terrible* car off your hands for free... AND I'll even buy you a Greyhound bus ticket back home AND give you $20 worth of spending money for the trip.
Deal?

As a Viper owner what are your thoughts on buying a 1st gen Viper? I've been contemplating it for quite some time.

I honestly don't know to much about 1st Gens. I haven't driven or worked on them so I don't want to lead you on the wrong path. I know about Gen III and a little about Gen II. If you love Vipers it will be your best purchase. You'll enjoy it immensely.
